June 24, 2010, the goats and I began their gainful employment as weed eaters. Yay!
Cathy, who I know through the Valley Fiber Arts guild as well as one of my favorite feed stores, talked her landlady, Janice, into trying out having my goats eat the overgrown side yard where Cathy lives. Janice's nick name is Goat Lady even though she's never owned any! So, I guess it wasn't too hard a sell to get her to agree to the goat weed eaters!
Janice volunteered her two sons, Colin and Dana, to help with the installation of my "portable" electric mesh fence. Janice's part of the job was to hold the leashes for the two start up goats while the boys and I put up the fence. The boys are great workers and did a fine job. It only took 3 times longer than I thought (hoped) it would, but what the heck, we got it done!
Being the first official set up beyond what I had done on the farm and at my mom's, it went remarkably well, I guess. The only bad glitch was that I have electrical dyslexia. For the second time in my career with this fence I hooked up the battery wires to the fence, and the fence wires to the battery. doh. Took awhile to sort that out, but when hooked to the right things, the whole system worked perfectly!
PS July As far as I can tell the project was a screaming success. Cathy tells me that the grass is growing back faster than the weeds: another good thing!
